TODAY'S TMJ4's Community Baby Shower's impact on Milwaukee day care

The TODAY'S TMJ4 Community Baby Shower benefits multiple organizations around Southeast Wisconsin, including the New Horizon Day Care Center in Milwaukee.

The day care cares for more than 70 children aged six weeks to 12 years, and many receive support from the TODAY'S TMJ4 Community Baby Shower.

"We serve kids of all ages, all backgrounds. All financial resources are welcome here," said co-owner Olivia el-Amin.

Shanika White is a lead teacher in the infant room. She is able to care for her own daughter while there. She also gets support from the Community Baby Shower.

"Some diapers, wipes and a lot of clothing because oh my gosh they grow so fast!" White laughed. "Nobody told me really that it will happen this fast."

el-Amin said New Horizon has received support from the Baby Shower for at least 10 years. She said one thing they could use more of is diapers for toddlers.

"People will say, 'Do you have size four and five?' and I look and say oh, I only have one or two."

The center also appreciates handmade blankets, hats and clothing.

"That's not something people normally do - hand craft things and take that time to knit - so those things go with you throughout your years. They relish them," said el-Amin.

el-Amin added, "It goes to show there are warm hearts. There are kind spirits. There are people who may not have a lot themselves but still feel a need to give and be supportive of others."

New Horizon Day Care Center collects baby shower items from the Sentry Foods store at 92nd & Lisbon in Milwaukee.
