On the night of April 13 a landowner in Vernon County called the sheriff to report a strange man on his property.

Surprisingly he did not know it was the subject of an ongoing manhunt Joseph Jakubowski.

Jeff Gorn, the landowner, was riding his ATV through his 150-acres when he spotted Jakubowski.

“And I have a man that's living in a, it looks like a blue tarp. Um talked to him for awhile. He says that he is living off the grid,” Gorn said.

Gorn then got to the important question.

“Is there anything or is there anybody out there that in the area that you guys are looking for? He's about 32 years old, medium build, pretty rough character,” he said.

Sheriff’s personnel told Gorn about Jakubowski. He checked on the line and called back. Here’s how the conversation went:

Dispatcher: Vernon County Sheriff's office.
Gorn: It's him.
Dispatcher: What.
Gorn: It is the guy.
Dispatcher: Okay.
Gorn: I've got a picture online.
Dispatcher: Okay can I put you on hold for just a second?
Gorn: It is, it's definitely him.
Dispatcher: Okay thank you.

Gorn played on his conversation with the outlaw perfectly.

“I told him he didn't have to leave until tomorrow and he said 'thank you man, I appreciate it.' And then I plead the case like. I was a therapist for years. I plead the case like yea I understand you know what he's going through and whatever else. But we never got into the nitty gritty part of it. All he did was he said he sent some letters out,” Gorn said.

The next morning federal and state authorities surrounded Jakubowski’s campsite and took him into custody. He now faces charges stemming from the burglary of a Janesville gun shot.
