Wednesday's heat led to a traffic mess on I-41, when a section of pavement buckled.
Crews spent more than four hours repairing the highway, closing down two lanes in the process.
The buckle was reported at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. According to a Milwaukee County official, the pavement was raised about eight to 12 inches.
Wednesday's incident was the 39th time so far this summer that pavement has buckled in the state. Compare that to only 25 incidents last summer, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
Delays were observed most of the day on the stretch of highway between Silver Spring Drive and Good Hope Road. All lanes reopened at about 4:15 p.m.
Pavement buckles happen when we get to about 85 degrees, and hotter because the concrete expands and sometimes can exceed the strength of the pavement, causing it to buckle.
Humidity also plays a factor since the concrete absorbs water.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says it's best to report a buckle when you see it and try to drive around it to avoid damaging your car or causing an accident.
