OCONOMOWOC —A gas leak prompted the evacuation of 42 residents of a memory care facility in Oconomowoc on Friday night.

The Western Lakes Fire District responded to call of strong odor of natural gas inside of the facility just after 11 p.m.

When fire crews arrived to the scene, the evacuation of the residents was already underway. Crews began providing blankets to the residents due to the cold weather.
The Western Lakes Fire District says arrangements were made with nearby Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital to transport all residents and staff to the hospitals conference center for the prolonged evacuation.

We Energies crews arrived to the scene and were able to locate the exterior gas main and shut off gas to the facility. Crews were also able to locate multiple gas leaks in the system. Those leaks were repaired and the residents of the facility were allowed to return.

The Western Lakes Fire Department says the cause of the leaks is still undetermined.
