Oak Creek teacher returns to classroom after near-fatal sickness

He was in intensive care after getting meningitis

OAK CREEK -- An Oak Creek wrestling coach and elementary school teacher returned to the classroom Wednesday after a sudden bout of bacterial meningitis nearly took his life.

His doctors said it's amazing how quickly Terry Nachtigall recovered. He was in intensive care, then had to undergo physical and speech therapy.

Two months later, TODAY'S TMJ4 was there as he was welcomed back as the gym teacher at Meadowview Elementary School.

"The support has been unbelievable," Nachtigall said. "It shows the power of prayer and all the well-wishes. I got so many messages of support, not just from people I know but from complete strangers. It's very humbling. You don't know what you mean to people until something like happens."

Doctors still don't know exactly what caused the meningitis.

Nachtigall said he will be teaching summer school and will be back coaching wrestling next year.
