MILWAUKEE - Stars and Stripes Honor Flight (SSHF) flew ninety southeast Wisconsin veterans on Sunday in the organization's second of three spring Honor Flights.
The group left Milwaukee’s Mitchell Airport at 7 a.m. Sunday. Once they arrived in Washington D.C., they toured the WWII Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Iwo Jima/Marine Corps Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall. The group also saw the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.
Veterans aboard this Honor Flight included a 98-year-old farmer from Almond who was a medic on the front lines in WWII, a Korean War Marine who fought in the terrible conditions at the Chosin Reservoir, and a 96-year-old female WWII Coast Guard veteran. In total, thirteen were WWII veterans, 76 were Korean War veterans and one was Vietnam War veteran.
The heroes arrived back to Milwaukee around 9 p.m. that night and received a warm welcome back from family, friends, and the community.
Stars and Stripes Honor Flight has flown 4,907 local veterans on these trips to Washington, DC since 2008, and has honored 50 veterans locally who were not able to fly.
