Newspaper's "Negro" headline turns heads

A front page headline in a western Wisconsin newspaper Thursday caused some readers to do a double take.

The top story in the Marinette Menominee Eagle Herald read "Negro hired as city assessor" -- which looks strange at first blush, until you learn that the new city assessor is named Mari Negro.

The curious headline has Menominee residents talking. A post on an online forum described the reaction as a "huge uproar."

But the comments on the forum are mixed. Some posters believe there's nothing wrong with the headline because it's factually accurate, while others believe the newspaper should have added Negro's first name to avoid confusion.

Efforts to reach the newspaper for comment were not immediately returned.
