MILWAUKEE -- A new technology could help improve safety across Milwaukee.

It's called Star Chase. If a police officer pulls over a vehicle, they can fire a small device onto its bumper if the driver decides to take off.  The device will then be used to track the vehicle.

A pilot program for the device started in December 2015.

Representatives from the Milwaukee Police Department will brief the city's Public Safety Committee at City Hall Thursday morning on how the implementation of Star Chase is going so far.

Those who support the technology said it protects the public while those against said it's not fool-proof and can result in criminals getting away.

The Star Chase units cost about $5,000 each. Milwaukee police said they used money from seized property to pay for them.

The department hasn't said how many were bought or how many squad cars are outfitted with the technology.
