A pizza delivery driver says he was robbed at gun point over the weekend, while on the job in Bay View.
Peter Brayton says he had just finished a delivery for Toppers in the 2400 block of S. Lenox St. early Sunday morning when a man approached him as he was getting back into his car.
"A gentleman came up behind me, put a gun to the back of my head, said 'don't move,'" said Brayton.
Brayton is the assistant manager at the Toppers location in Bay View, but had to fill in for one of the drivers Saturday night. He said he did what the armed robber asked and watched as the thief got into his car and drove away.
Brayton says the armed robber had an accomplice who followed in a newer white SUV. But Brayton's car is a push start and he still had his key fob, so the car stalled once the suspect drove out of range. He thinks that must have made the suspects angry.
"They proceeded to break every window of my car and ransacked it for any type of cash or monetary value," he said.
He says they stole his wallet and phone. He ended up walking back to Toppers to call police. Officers met him there and he filed a report. Police at District 6 confirm that officers recovered his car and it is now in a secure facility to be processed.
In the meantime, Brayton says he can't sleep thinking about what happened.
"I just can't focus," he said. "I can't think, I can't keep my head on straight. I broke down so many times."
He hopes sharing his story will warn other drivers to pay closer attention. He also hopes customers will start watching out for drivers.
"I think it would be a good practice for customers just to make sure that delivery drivers do get back into their cars safe and sound," he said. "It's just looking out for our neighbors and our friends as well."
Police are investigating the incident. Brayton asks that anyone with information comes forward.
