Authorities have given the all-clear after an Anhydrous ammonia leak caused the shutdown of several highways in the Racine-Kenosha area for hours this morning.

By late afternoon officials said roads had reopened and there was no longer any danger to the public. The incident remains under investigation.

According to the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office, a trailer carrying the chemical started leaking while traveling down Highway “KR.”

Once the driver pulled over, first responders were called to the scene. Firefighters were able to stop the leak and allow the gas to dissipate into the air safely. Residents in the area were told to shelter in place and close their windows while the scene was cleared.

One man, Paul Jager had to be evacuated from his house by firefighters. He said he was sitting in his home when they rushed in.

“All of a sudden I hear hello, hello and someone comes into my house” Jager said.

He was asked to stay out of the area while the scene was cleared.

Sheriff’s office says because this was a mechanical malfunction the driver or the company hauling the ammonia will not be cited. Anhydrous ammonia is commonly used as a fertilizer source on farms.
